From the audience, the stage is empty save for the pounding energy that emanates from the closed curtain. The hustle and bustle is hidden, the hours of hard work, the accidents, the laughs and the new relationships concealed behind the large black drapes. As the curtain finally opens, a hush falls over the crowd. Finally, the awaited show begins, and yet it is only the façade…for underneath the costumes, the lights, and the acting is a whole world known only to those who were involved…

Harrington Theatre Arts Company has been a well-known and respected student run theatre group on the campus of the University of Delaware for over 30 years. Started in 1974, HTAC is now a registered university organization maintained entirely by students. Through the hard work, dedication and imagination of the members, HTAC produces three to five shows a year, each differing in size, type, and production. These include glitzy, extravagant musicals that light up the big stage as well as minimalist dramatic plays showcased in the black-box theater.

HTAC provides a multitude of opportunities for students who are interested in all facets of theatre. Members participate in a variety of ways. On stage, they act and sing. Behind the scenes, they exercise creativity on the technical or artistic staff. In the orchestra pit, they bring a score to life. There is also participation outside the production setting, as HTAC members create lasting friendships and relationships that, many times, enrich and highlight their college experience.

It is very easy to get involved, and HTAC would love to have you. If you would like to learn more, or just love to be around “theatre people,” don’t hesitate to come to one of our weekly meetings!
